New investment to make Bournemouth safer

13/05/2008 18:24 by Seb

Yours truely Even though it's pretty such out here in sunny Bournemouth, Bournemouth Borough Council has invested £1.9 million pounds in CCTV monitoring equipment in the last 3 years. Yes, big brother is watching you!

But the high definition CCTV cameras have helped local police significantly with arresting those that like to ruin it for the rest of us. The CCTV cameras are placed all over town centre and near the sea front and are monitored 24 hours a day, something to consider next time you are taking a sanitary break against your favourite tree.

Martyn Webster, Dorset Police's CCTV Liaison Officer, said: "In the past month, (April), Dorset Police has successfully been able to use CCTV evidence to arrest, charge and process 62 people for offences ranging from assault and criminal damage to indecent exposure and assault on police. 28 of those arrests were sparked by calls made by CCTV staff to the police. These figures are testament to the efficiency of the system and I hope are proving to be a deterrent to potential offenders."

So there you go, if Mr. Webster is happy than I guess it's a good thing we're being watched 24/7. There are also other initiatives in Bournemouth aimed at improving the quality of nightlife and enhancing street safety. The Bournemouth Town Watch committee for example, exists of member from the local authorities and council as well as night time venue owners. They have improved door staff and safety on the streets at night, making Bournemouth a nicer place for all of us. More about the Town Watch is to follow.
